Epilator Buyer's Guide
Hair removal is an ongoing battle for women. We want silky, smooth skin, and that means getting rid of unwanted hair on our legs, underarms, and anywhere else it sprouts up. That’s where an epilator comes in handy.
Epilators are different than shaving your skin. It’s more like waxing because the hair is removed by the root – not merely cut off. That gives you more time with non-stubbly skin. But where it’s different than waxing is that it’s not taking off skin cells too, as waxing does.
With so many epilators flooding the market, deciding which one to buy can be tricky. Here are some questions to ask yourself before you buy.
How Many Tweezers Are Attached?
Epilators use rotating tweezers to pull the hair out by the root. The more tweezers you have, the quicker your epilator can do its job. You can find epilators with as few as 20 tweezers or with as many as 72 tweezers.
Although tweezer epilators are widely popular, there are other types as well, such as ones that use springs and those that use rotating discs.
What Attachments Come With It?
Depending upon which model you choose, you’ll see a lot of different attachment possibilities. Some epilators come with numerous attachments such as exfoliation brushes, massage brushes, facial cleansing brushes, trimmers, and shaving heads.
Having trimming and shaving options can make your epilator more versatile. But if you aren’t the type to use many attachments, you might be better off getting a model without them because you’ll likely pay extra for them. There’s no sense in paying for something you don’t think you’ll use.
How Many Speeds Does It Have?
Having more than one speed is important because epilators can be painful. You are pulling hairs out by the root – that’s never going to be pain-free. But how quickly it’s done can change the level of pain you’ll feel.
It’s nice to have a higher-speed option if you can tolerate the pain because it can make the job much quicker. Women with sensitive skin or those who are removing hair in sensitive areas may want a lower speed so they can tolerate it better. That’s why having a two-speed or even three-speed model can be important.
How Is It Powered?
This is a big deal because it dictates where you can use your epilator and for how long. Epilators come in three general types when it comes to power: corded, rechargeable, or battery-powered.
If you don’t want one more device cluttering up your counter, you might want to skip the rechargeable unit. But keep in mind, it’s nice to have because it gives you some portability, as long as you’re responsible enough to keep it fully charged at all times. One drawback to a rechargeable unit is that the charge may be used up before you’re done with your hair removal. Look for a unit that delivers at least 40 to 50 minutes of performance per charge so you don’t have to wait for it to recharge before you can finish the job.
Corded units are great in the sense that you can finish the job all at one time because you won’t run out of power. But they limit your mobility, and you won’t be able to use them in the shower.
Battery-powered units can be expensive to run unless you use rechargeable batteries.
Can It Be Used In Water?
Some people prefer using their epilators in the shower. To them, it feels less painful than using it on dry hair and skin because the hot water can help open up pores, leading to less discomfort. That’s solely a matter of preference, but if you’re new to using an epilator, you won’t know which method you prefer yet.
For that reason, it might be a good idea to buy an epilator that can be used wet or dry, instead of just one that can only be used on dry hair and skin. At least that way you have the option of doing it either way, and you can decide from there which method you prefer.
Do You Want To Use It On Your Face?
If you have peach fuzz on your face that you’d like to remove, you can use any epilator to do so. But you’ll have varying degrees of success. Since facial hair is often shorter and finer than the hair you’d typically remove elsewhere, you need an epilator capable of grabbing very short hairs.
Some epilators remove hair that is up to four times shorter than what you’d be able to remove with waxing. Also, some epilators aren’t as well suited for removing facial hairs as others. You’ll have better luck with those that have attachments made specifically for the removal of facial hair. These attachments will fit better in hard-to-reach areas and on smaller, curved parts of your face.
