Lawn Mower Buyer's Guide
Mowing the lawn can be a very gratifying and relaxing task. When you have the right equipment, you will quickly find mowing the lawn isn’t really a chore, but a way for you to unwind, get some sun and get out of doing the dishes. With many advancements in technology, mowing the lawn is no longer as time-consuming, smelly or exhausting as it used to be.
Now that we have changed your mind about mowing the lawn, read on to learn more about the different types of lawn mowers available and a quick note about our top picks based on your needs.
Power Types
The first lawn mower created back in 1830 was a reel mower and many people (including myself) still use this type of manual lawn mower. Reel lawn mowers are environmentally friendly because they do not require gas, oil or electricity – they are fueled by you! They require more physical activity because you have to push the lawn mower to spin the blades, which cut the grass like a pair of scissors rather than ripping the grass. The con of using a reel mower (aside from physical activity if you don’t want it) is if your grass grows fast you might have to mow more frequently because the blades do not cut as far down as other mowers. You will also need to make sure you keep your blades sharp by purchasing a blade sharpening and using every few months (depending on how frequently you mow your lawn).
Next, let’s take a look at the mower we are all probably most familiar with – the gas-powered mower. Gas-powered lawn mowers do not have to be charged and are not limited by a cord. Lawnmowers in this category cut through long, tough grass nearly effortless which shortens the amount of time you have to spend mowing. The cons of using this type of mower are the stinky gas smells, the sound, and they are very heavy. While this might be what you are used to there are many more environmentally-friendly options to choose from!
The majority of our top lawn mowers are electric-powered mowers. There are two types of electric lawn mowers: corded and cordless. Corded, as the name suggests, require the mower to be plugged in while in use. Electric mowers are convenient to maintain and lighter than gas mowers. The cons are they can be annoying if you have a large area to cover and if they are corded, you need to work around the cord. While the cord may be annoying, cordless mowers do not stay charged for long amounts of time. However, contrary to your initial feelings, electric-powered corded mowers are easy to use, especially once you get used to working around the cord. If you have ever used a corded vacuum you will be fine!
Finally, we come to the battery-powered mowers. Similar to manual and electric mowers, battery-powered mowers are lightweight and much quieter than gas-powered mowers. Battery-powered lawn mowers are easy to maneuver and just require charging before use. Depending on the model, once fully charged, you will have about an hour before needing another charge – which should give you plenty of time to knock out your lawn. One major disadvantage is you will have to replace the battery at some point while you own this mower, however proper battery maintenance will extend the life of your battery. If you are looking into purchasing a battery-powered lawn mower make sure it comes with a battery and charger!
Drive Type
Similar to cars, lawn mowers have a few different systems including manual, all wheel drive, front wheel drive, and rear wheel drive.
Manual lawn mowers are propelled by you! Unlike all other drive types, you make the mower move. For all wheel drive mowers, all four wheels are connected to the power source and all work together to move the lawn mower. All-wheel drive mowers move quickly and with more power. Front wheel drive mowers offer more maneuverability than any other drive type. The final drive type is rear wheel drive which only uses the back wheels. The most important thing to look for in rear wheel drive mowers is the size of the back tires. Low wheels work really well on flat and even ground, while high wheels are more useful on uneven or steep ground.
How to Get it Started
There are three types of start options including key start, push to start and recoil start. The key start requires you to put the key in the ignition to start the lawn mower. Push to start is self-explanatory and is available on electric and gas models. Finally, we have the recoil start which is the start type many of us associate with a lawnmower. The recoil start requires you to manually pull the cord to start the lawn mower. Luckily modern technology has made this process much easier than it used to be, you won’t have to pull the cord multiple times and wish it would start.
